Quick answer
Day one is about protecting your home, confirming the plan, and stripping out the old bathroom. We arrive, run through the layout and the day’s plan with you, sheet up the route in and protect carpets and stairs, then take the old suite, tiles and flooring back to bare walls. It’s the messiest day — but it’s also where any hidden surprises show up early.
The first day, hour by hour
There’s a calm rhythm to a good first day, and it isn’t all noise and rubble. Here’s roughly how the morning and afternoon tend to run on a Plymouth bathroom.
Arrival & walk-through
We arrive at the agreed time, introduce the team and your project manager, and walk the room with you. We confirm the layout, where everything’s going, the agreed plan and any last questions — so we both start on the same page.
Protection & setup
Before any tools come out, we sheet the route from the front door, protect carpets, flooring and the stairs, and set up a tidy working zone. Dust control and a clear path for carrying waste come first.
Strip-out begins
The old suite, tiles and flooring come out methodically — not smashed about. We isolate water and electrics safely, remove fittings, and take the room back towards bare walls and floor.
Survey of what’s behind
With the walls exposed, we check for damp, rot and tired wiring. If something needs attention, we show you there and then — far better to find it on day one than build over it.
Waste cleared, site tidied
Rubble and the old suite are cleared as we go and at the end of the day, so you’re not living around a skip’s worth of debris in the hall.
End-of-day update
Before we leave, your project manager runs through what we did and what’s happening tomorrow. The room’s left safe, and the door’s locked behind us. See the full installation process.
What to do before we arrive
You don’t need to do much, but a little prep makes day one smoother for everyone:
- Clear personal items, toiletries and towels out of the bathroom.
- Make sure we can get to the stopcock and consumer unit.
- Keep a clear path from the front door to the bathroom for carrying materials and waste.
- Pop pets somewhere settled and away from the open doors.
- If it’s your only bathroom, sort your back-up shower arrangement for the days we’ll have flagged.
That’s genuinely it. Everything else — protection, tools, waste, materials — is on us. We’d rather you relaxed than felt you had to prepare a building site.
Protect first, then strip out methodically — day one sets the tone for a tidy, well-run job.
Why the first day matters so much
A bathroom fit lives or dies by its start. Strip-out is when the unknowns become known — the damp behind the old tiles, the perished wiring, the floor that’s softer than it looked. Finding all of that on day one, while the room is open and nothing new has been built, means we can plan around it properly rather than discover it halfway through and scramble. It’s also why we survey before we quote: we want as few surprises as possible, and a written plan that holds.
Just as important, day one is where trust gets earned. The way a team protects your home, handles your old suite and tidies up tells you everything about how the next week and a half will go. That’s the standard we set from hour one — proud of the work, respectful of your home. Common questions about day one
Do I need to be there on the first morning?
We recommend it. Five minutes to confirm the plan and access at the start saves phone calls later. After the walk-through, you’re free to get on with your day.
How messy is the first day?
Strip-out is the dustiest part, but we contain it — sheeted routes, dust control and waste cleared as we go. It looks dramatic mid-morning and tidy by the time we leave.
What if you find a problem at strip-out?
We show you, explain the fix and any cost, agree it in writing, then carry on. Finding it on day one is exactly why we strip out carefully rather than rush. Ask us how we handle surprises.
