Quick answer
Yes — a proper bathroom fitter removes and disposes of your entire old bathroom as part of the job. Stripping out the old suite, tiles, flooring and any boxing-in, then skipping and disposing of the waste, is included in a full installation. You shouldn’t be left with a pile of rubble or a hire skip to sort out yourself.
What “removing the old bathroom” actually covers
When we quote a full bathroom installation in Plymouth, the strip-out is built into the price — not a bolt-on you discover later. Day one of nearly every job is taking the old room back to bare walls and floor so we know exactly what we’re working with. That’s where hidden damp, perished pipework or tired joists tend to show up, which is why we’d always rather strip first and find the surprises early.
A standard strip-out includes the lot:
- The bath, basin, toilet, shower and any vanity or storage units
- All wall tiles, tile adhesive and old plasterboard where it needs to come off
- Floor tiles or vinyl, and any rotten or uneven floor substrate underneath
- Old boxing-in, panelling, shower trays, enclosures and screens
- Redundant pipework, brackets, extractor fans and tired sealant
If you want to keep something — a cast-iron radiator, a sound mirror, a salvageable suite for another room — just tell us up front and we’ll set it aside carefully rather than skip it.
Who pays for the skip and the disposal?
We do — it’s part of a fixed, all-in quote. There’s no separate “waste removal” line that appears at the end, and you won’t be asked to arrange a skip, a permit for the road, or a tip run yourself. We handle the skip hire or grab lorry, the loading, and getting the waste to a licensed facility.
That matters for more than convenience. Construction waste has to go to a registered site, and a legitimate firm carries the waste-carrier registration and paperwork to prove where it went. If a quote looks unusually cheap, it’s worth asking whether disposal is genuinely included or quietly left for you to deal with. Our Plymouth bathroom cost guide sets out what a fair all-in price looks like so you can compare like for like.
Where Plymouth waste actually goes
Tiles, ceramics and old suites are heavy, so most of the cost is weight, not volume. We sort what can be recycled — metals, some plastics, hardcore — from what can’t, and dispose of the rest responsibly. Old baths and basins are frequently recycled rather than landfilled.
Strip-out and disposal are part of the job — your old bathroom leaves with us, not in a skip on your drive for weeks.
How we protect your home during the messy bit
The strip-out is the dustiest stage of any bathroom, but it doesn’t have to turn the whole house into a building site. We treat the room as a contained zone and the rest of your home as off-limits to our mess.
Sheet the route in
Floors, stairs, carpets and the landing on the way to the bathroom are covered and protected before a single tile comes off. Debris is bagged at the source rather than carried loose through the house.
Tidy down daily
Waste is cleared regularly rather than left to pile up, and we sweep down at the end of each day. A skip on the drive is loaded steadily, not left overflowing for a fortnight.
Manage the dust
Removing old tile adhesive and plaster is dusty work, so we keep the door closed, vacuum as we go, and leave the room broom-clean before first fix begins.

Common questions about old bathroom removal
Do I need to empty the bathroom before you arrive?
Just clear out toiletries, towels and anything personal or fragile. You don’t need to remove fittings, tiles or the suite — that’s our job. We’ll tell you in your start-of-job briefing exactly what to set aside.
Will there be a skip outside my house?
Often, yes, for a few days during the early stages — or a grab lorry for one-off collections. If your road needs a skip permit (common on busier Plymouth streets), we arrange and pay for it. Where there’s no room, we bag and remove waste by van instead.
What happens if you find damp or rot behind the old bathroom?
We stop and show you. Hidden damp, rot or failed waterproofing usually only appears once the old room is out. We’ll explain what we’ve found, what it means and any cost before carrying on — no quietly papering over it, and no surprise bills at the end.
Can you remove just the old bathroom without fitting a new one?
We can, though most clients book strip-out as part of a full fit. If you only need a removal — for example before a sale or a self-build stage — get in touch and we’ll quote the strip-out and disposal on its own.
