Quick answer
You can put a toilet almost anywhere — as long as you can deal with the drainage and ventilation. The limiting factor is getting waste away: ideally by gravity to a soil pipe, or with a macerator/pump where that isn’t possible. You also need adequate ventilation and a layout that meets the Building Regulations.
It’s not the toilet — it’s the drainage
The toilet pan itself is easy to install almost anywhere. What decides whether a new WC is practical is what happens to the waste once you flush. A toilet produces “soil” waste, which needs a larger pipe and the right fall to carry it reliably to the drains. The closer and lower you are to an existing soil stack, the simpler and cheaper the job. The further away, higher up, or more awkward the route, the more work — and the more likely you’ll need a pump.
So the honest answer is yes, you can usually put a toilet where you want it — but the cost and complexity swing wildly depending on how far it is from the existing drainage.
The two ways to get the waste away
Gravity to a soil pipe
The gold standard. Where the new toilet can connect to a soil stack with a steady downward fall (roughly a 1:40 gradient on the waste run), gravity does the work. It’s reliable, quiet and low-maintenance — and the option we always prefer where the layout allows it.
A macerator or pump
Where gravity can’t reach — a downstairs cloakroom far from the stack, a basement, or an en-suite on an awkward run — a macerator grinds the waste and pumps it through small-bore pipework to the drains. It opens up locations that would otherwise be impossible, with a little more maintenance to factor in.
Macerators are a genuinely useful tool, but they aren’t a free pass — they need power, they’re not silent, and they shouldn’t be the only toilet in a home. Where a gravity connection is feasible, we’ll always steer you that way.
The regs that shape where it goes
Beyond drainage, a few Building Regulations decide whether a particular spot is workable. We design around these from the start:
- Ventilation (Part F): a WC needs adequate extraction or an opening window
- Drainage (Part H): correct pipe sizes, falls and connection to the system
- Hygiene & space: enough room to use and clean the toilet, and a basin to wash hands
- Door positioning: a cloakroom opening directly into a kitchen can be a problem — a lobby or layout change may be needed
A new WC needs a basin nearby and proper ventilation — not just somewhere to sit the pan.

Do I need permission to add a toilet?
